Alice in Chains

Before Nirvana and the rest of the Seattle-area bands hit the airwaves in the early 1990s, guitarist Jerry Cantrell and singer Layne Staley formed a band that predated the grunge scene. The Seattle musicians formed Alice in Chains in 1987, before grunge music took over radio stations across the country. But the fellas weren't solely a grunge band. They skillfully blend acoustic and heavy metal music to get the unique sound of a generation and can be heard on the band's four albums, four compilation albums, two live albums, three EPs, and two DVDs. They became one of the most successful bands of that era, matching successes of such notable bands as Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Alice in Chains sold more than 17 million albums around the world and twice earned the top spot on Billboard 200 chart for "Alice in Chains" and "Jar of Flies." Although personal problems have plagued the band, Alice in Chains never officially broke up. They've taken hiatuses, of sorts, to deal with their troubles and reunited in 2005 and released another studio album in September 2009. "Black Gives Way to Blue," is their first album in 14 years. Now's a great time to see these talented musicians back on stage performing classic hits as well as their new songs.
