Of all the indie rock bands to come out of Canada in recent years, Metric is definitely at the top of the list when it comes to great sound and awesome vocal talent. The band is made up of Emily Haines, who sings and plays guitar, James Shaw on guitar, Joules Scott-Key on drums, and John Winstead playing the bass guitar. The band began in Toronto, but has travelled to several different locations in Canada to record and also spent some time in New York City.
When they burst onto the scene in 2003 with their debut album, they were an instant critical hit, winning a Juno Award nomination for Best Alternative album. The Juno Awards are prestigious Canadian music awards that are like the Grammys in America. Their second album, released two years later was just as critically acclaimed, if not more so, and garnered them their second Juno nomination. They were also nominated for a Polaris Music Prize for the Canadian Album of The Year. Their most recent album, released in 2009, has also been received well and they finally took home some Juno Awards, for Alternative Album of the Year and Group of the Year.
In addition to their critical successes, Metric has a large fan base that heavily support the group's touring gigs. They also enjoy seeing the band members guest star in other bands on occasion and love it when other musicians are invited to play live with Metric. With their pure sound focused on music and strong lyrics, they are a great group to see live.
