The Oakland Raiders are every bit the football powerhouse that that their strong-sounding name would suggest. Historically known for the hard playing defense, this NFL team is always an admirable foe, even in the years when it amasses less than stellar records. The team, which was established in 1960, plays their games at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, a stadium that it shares with Major League Baseball team the Oakland Athletics. This arrangement does not typically cause too many problems, given what little overlap there is between the baseball and football seasons, but it can take some clever scheduling in the fall months to make sure each team is getting their requisite number of home games.
The Raiders team colors are white, black, and silver, and their logo is that of a man with an eye patch, with two swords crossing behind him to make an X. This logo is extremely popular with fans and their apparel sales do quite well year in and year out, even when the team is not doing as well. The team has not made the playoffs since 2002 and has not won a Super Bowl ring since the 1983 season, a long time for fans to go without a championship. Fans of the team, who are called "Raider Nation," are nonetheless pretty die hard about their team and can be seen with painted faces and chests come game day.
The Raiders have several prior players in the Hall of Fame, including Marcus Alan, George Blanda, Jerry Rice, and Howie Long. Because of the historical success of the team, fans often think that the next year will be the one where they will return to their former glory.
