Smokey Robinson

When you think about Motown and the great musical output from Detroit under that label, one name that immediately comes to mind is Smokey Robinson.  He has even been called the King of Motown because he is one of the most successful acts from Motown.

Although he may be known best to people today as solo artist, he actually got his start as the lead singer in The Miracles, the first Motown group.  Like his solo work, the group focused on R&B and soul sounds, which were perfect for his vocal abilities.  Between his work with the Miracles and on his own, Robinson had an astonishing 37 singles make the Top 40 chart.

In addition to making music, Robinson also has served as a producer and songwriter for other acts, helping them make it on their own to have some of the success he has experience.  He also worked in the business side of Motown, as well, becoming the president of the label, which really showed that he really is a jack of all trades.

Some of Robinson's best known songs are Quiet Storm, Cruisin, and Ebony Eyes, a song he sang with Rick James.  His "Quiet Storm" song ended up becoming the name of many radio shows around the country playing the songs similar to that one, which are smooth R&B songs.

Recently, Robinson has done some interesting performances, among a show with the BBC Concert Orchestra in London.  That show was as a tribute to the 50th anniversary to Motown.  He also recently performed with Eric Clapton, which was a dynamic duo of incredible music ability.
