The 39 Steps

Alfred Hitchcock was one of the preeminent directors of his time, bringing to the screen a score of amazing films that are still highly loved decades later.  One of his great films that is still popular today is the 1935 movie The 39 Steps.  The movie was based on a novel of the same name, which was written all the way back in 1915.  It is amazing that something written nearly one hundred years ago still has the driving force that it does today, but this story is one of those cases.

After the great success of the movie, The 39 Steps was turned into a Broadway play.  It has a case of just four members, who each play several different roles in the show.  The play is a very close, practically verbatim, recitation of the movie, which is an amazing feat for a play.  Unlike the movie, however, the play is less serious, especially the way that it is done with the same actors playing multiple roles.  It has a much funnier presentation than the film and it is a wonder what Hitchcock would think of the adaptation.  He probably would appreciate the references to his other movies like Psycho and Rear Window.

This play had a good run on Broadway and has been performed in many venues throughout the country.  While typically musicals have more success nationwide than plays, this play has done quite well.  It could be people's love for Hitchcock, or just the great way that the show is directed that really gets people interested in the show.  Shows have been sold out in some venues and nearly sold out in others.
